Picture Perfect: Celebrate Why Photography Matters
*Snap* August 19 is World Photography Day – the perfect time to focus on the art, craft, science, and history of capturing moments. Whether you’re a professional or a weekend phone snapper, there are fun ways to get involved.
#WorldPhotographyDay
In 2010, the first World Photography Day came to be when 270 photographers shared their pictures in a global online gallery, captivating gazes from all over the globe.
More than an image capture, photography is about capturing moments and emotions. From a group of friends celebrating a milestone to the moment teammates secure the win, photographs let us re-experience moments.
A historical snapshot
Modern photography dates back to 1839 when the French Academy of Sciences created detailed images on a sheet of copper coated with silver, with no negative: the first permanent image with a camera.
Forty years later, in 1884, George Eastman replaced the copper plate with film, effectively making photography more accessible. And by 1888, Eastman had developed the Kodak camera, putting photography in our hands.
These days, it’s all about the immediate, editable and shareable world of digital photography. But there’s still something special about tangible pics – the nostalgia and the notion of holding a moment in your hand.
