RUOK - Create Connections

RUOK? Day, A More Than Ok Way to Create Connections

Life can be challenging, with ups and downs that test us along the way. Balancing emotions while managing everyday responsibilities isn’t always easy, and overwhelming feelings can sometimes creep in. In those moments, it’s common to feel uncertain or alone, but it’s also an opportunity to reach out, connect, and find hope in the support around you.

RUOK?

Like the bright yellow branding suggests, RUOK? Day acts as a beacon of hope and a reminder to check in with the people on your radar, from significant others and oldest friends and neighbours to new acquaintances and coworkers. Start the conversation with three simple words: ‘Are you okay?’. This powerful icebreaker can lead to life-changing discussions. When people feel safe and cared for, they’re more likely to disclose their feelings.

The Importance of RUOK? Day

This day carries a lot of weight across the community. In a school environment where bullying, academic and social media pressures are rife, this day can be a timely reminder for students and educators to check-in on each other. It creates a culture of care where students feel seen and heard.

In physically demanding and remote workplaces, RUOK? Day offers a vital opportunity to break through the silence and stigma surrounding mental health. This is a simple way to start conversations that build camaraderie and support, especially in jobs where isolation and harsh conditions can heighten mental health challenges.

Connective placemaking

Architects and local councils are also pivotal in promoting RUOK? Day. Public spaces, parks, and community centres inclusively designed to encourage interaction and connection are crucial backdrops for vital conversations. Thoughtfully placed outdoor furniture, like benches, tables, and cosy seating areas, help foster spontaneous interactions, breaking down barriers and making it easier for people to connect.

Start a conversation

It’s easy to get involved. Pick up the phone, knock on the door, arrange a coffee and check in on someone you know. Maybe your friend has been quiet, a coworker seems low, or your older neighbour who lives alone. Ask ‘Are you okay?’ then listen to their response. If you need some ideas, the RUOK? website has a wealth of practical guides, support tips, and videos in multiple languages.

More than a seat

Sometimes, having a place to be amidst the hustle and bustle can be grounding. Felton’s Buddy Bench is a great way to gather people in schools, parks, or community centres. A symbol of connection, the Buddy Bench is a comfy seat to sit, meet, and build friendships.

Beyond the day

Officially – R U OK? Day is on September 12, but the need for connection doesn’t end there. Life happens every day, so keep an eye out for your people all year round – have regular, meaningful conversations, even if they’re hard. Build trust so that when one of your people is struggling, they know you’re there.

Let’s talk

At Felton, we practise the culture of caring. If we can help in any way – let’s collaborate and find the best spot for your Buddy Bench. Now is the time to intentionally design outdoor spaces where people can connect. RUOK?
