Felton Grow Your Sports Club

Four ways to grow your sports club

 Have a team for everybody

If there’s one thing Australians love, it’s sport. Apart from the obvious benefits to players (like keeping people fit and healthy, learning about teamwork and trying your best), one of the biggest benefits of sports clubs is how they bring the community together. From playing in a team as youngsters to watching and coaching your own kids as adults, everyone can find a place to belong in a sports club. But keeping everyone involved and connected over the years requires a bit of work. Here are four ways you can grow your sports club and keep your community strong.

The young, the old, men and women alike: everyone can benefit from sport. Having teams that cover a variety of age groups is one of the best ways to grow your sports club. Having more categories not only means that more people are able to participate as players, but will communicate the message that your club is an inclusive place where everyone can belong.

Engage local businesses in sponsorship and marketing

Sporting clubs aren’t just made up of players: everyone from coaches, supporters, the volunteers that run the weekly barbeque and tuck shop, as well as their financial supporters, play a massive role.

Be active with promoting the services of local businesses that sponsor your club as they are often the club’s financial backbone. Mention them through your club newsletters, social media pages and signage at the sporting grounds – without being asked to do so. Not only is this a great way to say thank you, it will also help you attract more supporters. With more coin in the kitty, you’ll be able to invest more in your teams, as well as in activities that bring the community together and grow your sports club.

Refurbish your sports grounds

There are many ways to show pride in your club, from wearing the jersey in public to turning up to Council meetings. One of the most visible ways to show that pride in your club is to maintain your sporting grounds. An upgrade in your sports facilities is another way to grow your sports club. Having enough grandstand seating will encourage more supporters to come and make the experience more comfortable – especially for families.

Make friendship and fun the main focus

Your vibe attracts your tribe and nothing can make or break a club like the mentality of its leaders. Focusing on developing friendships, community bonds and having a go will help players learn about the important values of the game, not just the desire to win. In turn, this will help develop a culture that attracts support far and wide. There’s no better way to grow your sports club than to get your current members talking about how fantastic it already is.
