Felton Connecting People in Public Spaces

Connecting People in Public Spaces

The concept of placemaking has recently gained traction, which involves strengthening the connection between individuals and the place they share. Interaction between people and the environment can be enhanced to generate a positive use of the space, through means such as wide and accessible streets, squares, bike paths and street furniture. The connection between the buildings, paths, sidewalks and furniture contributes to both the safety and attractiveness of urban design to create more interesting streets. Well designed and functional furniture transforms spaces making them more inclusive, safer whilst strengthening the community. With a renewed focus towards green spaces and parks by governments, councils and architect’s street furniture is becoming increasingly more relevant to revitalise densely populated urban centres.

Seats and Benches

Seating is used to enhance a sense of community, by creating a visually attractive setting for the community encouraging social interaction. Seats and benches should be functionally designed to seamlessly integrate into the surroundings. This includes measures such as armrests and back supports to provide better assistance towards the elderly and vulnerable members of the community. The measurements of the seating also need to foster socialising by ensuring that the space is comfortable and easy to access. Furniture that is placed strategically and appropriately selected will encourage use of outdoor space and set expectations as to the quality and development of the area.

Litter Bins

To ensure a clean and tidy outdoor space we need to ensure that the space is adequately equipped with bins to facilitate easy disposal of rubbish. By placing bins in visible locations where they are likely be used e.g., intersections and traffic crossings we encourage cleaner public spaces. It is important to also consider that placement of bins in relation to seating to minimise odours.

Trees

By placing greenery and nature in public spaces it creates definition of the space and enhances the concept of placemaking. Trees especially help to better navigation and create a calming atmosphere within the public space. Having green spaces provides opportunity for rest and relaxation. The natural space also gives an idea as to the spacing and positioning of furniture pieces for optimal use.

Lighting and Signage

Lighting and signage are two other components that enhance use and social interactions within public spaces. Signs are used for both informative and directional purposes and using correct signage greatly enhances navigation of the space. To ensure readability and ease of navigation, strong colour between text and background is needed to avoid confusion.  Lighting also ensures that a public space is enhanced by creating social spaces, bettering navigation and interaction between natural and built environments. Lighting within a site needs to serve both functional purpose and enhance aesthetics of the space so factors such as type, location and intensity of the space should all be considered.
