Wood, Steel or Aluminium? A Long-Term Cost Comparison

Council budgets aren’t exactly elastic. Ratepayers want more shade, greener parks, safer playgrounds, and they want it all now. So when it comes to outdoor furniture, every dollar needs to pull its weight. While it’s tempting to choose a cheaper option upfront, the reality is that a bargain park bench can end up costing more over its lifetime than a durable alternative that withstands the weather. Let’s break down the true costs of wood, steel, and aluminium, so you can see what will really eat into your budget.

Round one: purchase price

  • Wood: It’s often the cheapest to buy, and people love its natural look, but the low purchase price can hide high maintenance.
  • Steel: This is your mid-range option upfront, but while steel comes with the lure of ‘indestructibility,’ it’s not immune to rust.
  • Aluminium: It’s usually a bit pricier upfront, but with aluminium, you’re paying for longevity, making it your best option for long-term investment.

So while wood looks like a winner in the short term, with a little more outlay, aluminium will go the distance and cost you less in the long term.

Round two: cleaning and maintenance

  • Wood: This is a needy material that requires regular cleaning, sanding, and sealing to avoid splinters, rot, or warping. If you skip a year, you’ll be sitting on rotting, splintery, unsafe settings.
  • Steel: Yes, steel is easy to wipe down, but once the paint chips, rust moves in faster than seagulls on a hot chip. The result is hard work – sanding, priming and repainting, again and again.
  • Aluminium: A quick wipe or hose down is all this hardy substance needs; no rot, no rust, no fuss.

Initially, steel is low-maintenance. As it ages, upkeep increases. This is where aluminium shines – it starts low-maintenance and stays low-maintenance.

Round three: repainting and repairs

  • Wood: Expect regular staining or painting if you want to stop wooden outdoor furniture from looking worn out. And that’s before replacing all the rotted slats.
  • Steel: This material needs repainting when coatings fail. Yes, powder-coating helps, but maintenance is inevitable.
  • Aluminium: Anodised or powder-coated finishes, aluminium keeps its look without constant touch-ups. It has built-in resistance, so scratches don’t spread rust.

Steel stretches further with powder-coating, but aluminium is naturally better at enduring daily wear and tear.

Round four: replacement

  • Wood: Expect replacements every 5–10 years. In coastal or damp conditions, even sooner.
  • Steel: This material outlasts wood, but eventually rusts to the point of being unsafe, especially in coastal or high-rainfall areas.
  • Aluminium: Essentially, aluminium lasts. With minimal maintenance, these settings can easily outlive their wooden and steel cousins.

Again, steel starts strong, but when you look at the long-term durability, aluminium wins again.

The lifetime cost showdown

When it comes to lifetime costs, the picture is pretty clear. Wood can seem like a bargain, but once you factor in repeat repainting, sealing, and eventual replacement, the price tag can double or triple.

Steel starts in the middle cost range, but the constant repainting cycle chips away at your budget. In coastal or wet areas, rust often brings replacement costs around faster than expected.

Aluminium benches sit at the higher end upfront, but here’s the twist: ongoing costs are next to nothing. Cleaning is quick, maintenance is minimal, and replacement is decades away. Stretch that over 20 years, and the so-called ‘expensive’ option often turns out to be the cheapest.

Send a message

As a council, you’re not just buying benches, you’re buying time, safety, and fewer phone calls about splinters, rust stains, or broken seats. Choosing durable, low-maintenance furniture frees up staff and budgets for the projects your community really needs.

Plus – shiny, well-kept furniture signals that you care, and public spaces are worth investing in.

Choose aluminium

It’s a fact: aluminium furniture saves councils money in the long run. Next time you’re comparing quotes, look past the sticker price and think – repainting and replacing in five years, or furniture that lasts for decades? Aluminium isn’t just a choice, it’s a smart investment. Let’s collaborate and find the best pieces for your project.
