Accessible, Inclusive Seating at Vasey RSL Bundoora

Based in Bundoora, North Melbourne, Vasey RSL is an aged care, residential living service for Victoria’s elderly. With a range of specialised programmes, this home is involved in crucial programmes to better meet the needs of older Victorians. With origins dating back to WW1, its aged care home offers catered programs to veterans and war widows. Accommodation and support services help boost older Australians quality of life. Vasey’s Bundoora facility has strong ties to the local community with involvement in kindergarten education programs and service organisations affiliated with the ADF.

In 2021, Vasey RSL Care entered the Great Felton Giveaway competition for a chance to win up to $10,000 worth of Felton outdoor furniture.

Vasey RSL Bundoora were looking for accessible, inclusive outdoor furniture for the residents within their Memory Support Unit. The Memory Support Unit offers customised support and increased care to Bundoora’s residents diagnosed with Dementia. It is important to keep normalised routines and maintain quality of life for residents with dementia. An important way to do this is time spent outdoors having the following key benefits:

• Light and fresh air are shown to reduce stress
• Participating in light exercise is important to maintain routine
• Sensory awareness is boosted
• Increases feelings of connection and socialisation.

Additionally with many residents having limited mobility, it was important this space accommodated their needs, so they could partake in social and gardening activities.

Out of many hundreds of entries, their special story and cause led them to be chosen as winners of the competition! They selected wheelchair accessible shelters and settings and street furniture from the Felton outdoor furniture range.

Ribbon Bench seat:  Made from premium quality Australian spotted gum, this timber setting provides a stylish addition to any outdoor space. This bench setting is paired with a low handle to assist getting into and out of the seat.
