Burnie City Council Safe and Sturdy Seating

In the thriving municipality of Burnie Tasmania, the City Council serves a community of over 19,000 people. Among these dreams is a simple one – to enjoy local sports and community events at the Wivenhoe Showground safely and comfortably.

Project Requirements

The bench seats at Wivenhoe Showground, a hub of community spirit and the home of the Burnie Harness Racing Club and the South Burnie Cricket and Football Clubs, had become a safety concern. The clubhouse’s timber bench seats while full of character, were deemed unsafe due to age and wear. The Council was faced with the challenge of providing sturdy, all-weather seating for over 1,000 spectators without compromising on comfort.

Project Solution

Working in close partnership with the Council, Felton Industries took on the task of creating a customised seating solution that prioritised safety, comfort and durability. The project is a two-phase undertaking, with Phase 1 completed and Phase 2 slated for the 2024-25 Financial Year. The solution involved manufacturing a customised frame that perfectly fit the venue planking, creating a double-plank tiered seating system. This design ensured an added level of safety and comfort for spectators.

The star of the project was the Plank Seat Durable Aluminium, a double plank seat designed to withstand the elements and the test of time. The 18-meter long and 17-tier high planks are made from premium aluminium, a material that doesn’t rust, warp or fade.

The planks were delivered without pre-drilled holes, allowing for on-site adjustment to align with the frame’s 1550mm centres. To top it all off, Felton’s Safety End Caps were added to the planks for an additional layer of protection.

The result was more than just an upgrade of the Wivenhoe Showground seating. It was a win for the entire community, a testament to the Council’s commitment to ensuring their facilities are safe, comfortable and built to last.
